A walk in Battle Great Wood

Sunday morning dawned crisp, fresh and bright and since we probably won’t get too many more days like this before winter we pulled on our boots and took a walk in nearby Battle Great Wood.  The ancient wood, managed by the Forestry Commission, is over 200 acres and I adore the fact that it’s right on our doorstep.

The path leading into the woods

The idea was to practise my photography and capture some of the autumnal colour in the woods but there wasn’t as much turning foliage as I’d hoped for.  Not to be put off we headed off-road for some foraging into the soft leaf-mould under the trees.  I was delighted to discover a forest full of fungi – easily pleased, me!

Just goes to show there’s plenty of exploring to be done right on your doorstep and still time on a Sunday for the papers, a home-cooked roast and a bit of Downton Abbey – perfect day!

  1. Lovely fungi photos. I especially love the shallow depth of field on the last one. You are so lucky to be right on the edge of such gorgeous woods. I would be out there almost every day if given the chance. I wonder how that first shot would look with snow.

    • Thank you :) I do have a shot of first one in the snow but it’s on an external hard drive – I’ll try and dig it out at the weekend – so pretty! We get out when we can but too wet and muddy at the moment…

    • I looked up a few of them and apprently the innocuous looking ones are more likely to be poisonous – don’t think I’ll risk it though….

    • I got quite excited as there were so many different varieties! Working away at the mo – I’m currently sitting on the hospitality desk in hotel reception – might be able to get some free time in a couple of hours :)

  2. How lovely to have an ancient wood right on your doorstep. Papers, a roast, and Downton Abbey is Sunday perfection. Shame it’s the last Downton episode tomorrow.
